Dis-Engaged by Jamie Bond The Year of the Poet ~ January 2014

Dis-Engaged

A promise of no drama
Is what you offered me
But instead of heaven
I kept on smelling
Singed feathers upon your wings
Every embrace left a blemish
As if I changed a flat tire in a white shirt
Every goodbye felt easy like
Sunday morning … it never hurt
You’ve managed to
Deactivate my solitude
Like you always do
Successfully stolen my hollowness
By filling this void with you
Kept trying to sell me on invested time
As if Dow Jones really cared
But I never had stock in your lies
Just this seasonal time share
You encouraged me to give you
Yet another chance with me
Baby I'm bleeding truths in this truce
But you’re slowly killing me
How does a bouquet of ragweed
Become a blessing
To someone with allergies
Trust was the stem you cut
And exterminated
Terminated our would be life
With your pesticide lies
Each flower has got only one shot
At blossoming
How does loving you with my all
Give you the best of me
If you keep trying to
Change and rearrange
Brick City chunks of me
….You're a destination
Not my destiny…

The one and only Prentice Powell

Join Jamie Bond, Chamber Seven & Kelligraphy Pens for a special event Thursday, January 23rd at 8pm EST on WKPJB 103.9 The Indie Storm.

Tonight we have the Amazing, Phenomenal, Authentic, Poet straight off Fiveology's debut on Arsenio Hall...The one and only Prentice Powell.

Prentice Powell Bio:

With humility uncommon to those of like talent, he humbly approaches every stage from Amsterdam to South Africa knowing that he has a gift, yet boasts of it only in his confident demeanor. As an educator, a family man and much more than a writer, he is an accomplished spoken word artist and one fifth of the phenomenal spoken word collective, Fiveology. He has been recognized as a National Slam Finalist, opened for musical acts such as Jill Scott, Goapele and Stevie Wonder, made appearances on Verses & Flow seasons 1, 2, and 3, hosted numerous open mics throughout California to include Mouth Off at the Air Lounge in Oakland, recently performed as one of the first spoken word artists on the Arsenio Hall show and appeared again with Fiveology. His modesty regarding his spoken and written talents is notable, considering that both adequately communicate the depth of his consciousness in rhyme for those willing to learn from it. As a distinguished member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc, he embodies the mentality of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the desire to uplift humanity. We at WKPJB are honored and privileged to have this opportunity to speak with the remarkably talented Prentice Powell.

Today in History

Today is Saturday, Jan. 18, the 18th day of 2014. There are 347 days left in the year.

On Jan. 18, 1911, the first landing of an aircraft on a ship took place as pilot Eugene B. Ely brought his Curtiss biplane in for a safe landing on the deck of the armored cruiser USS Pennsylvania in San Francisco Harbor.

1778

English navigator Captain James Cook reached the present-day Hawaiian Islands, which he named the "Sandwich Islands."

1862

the tenth president of the United States, John Tyler, died in Richmond, Va., at age 71, shortly before he could take his seat as an elected member of the Confederate Congress.

1871

William I of Prussia was proclaimed German Emperor in Versailles (vehr-SY'), France.

1919

the Paris Peace Conference, held to negotiate peace treaties ending the (First) World War, opened in Versailles (vehr-SY'), France.

1943

during World War II, Jewish insurgents in the Warsaw Ghetto launched their initial armed resistance against Nazi troops, who eventually succeeded in crushing the rebellion. A U.S. ban on the sale of pre-sliced bread — aimed at reducing bakeries' demand for metal replacement parts — went into effect.

1949

Charles Ponzi, engineer of one of the most spectacular mass swindles in history, died destitute at a hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at age 66.

1957

a trio of B-52's completed the first non-stop, round-the-world flight by jet planes, landing at March Air Force Base in California after more than 45 hours aloft.

1967

Albert DeSalvo, who claimed to be the "Boston Strangler," was convicted in Cambridge, Mass., of armed robbery, assault and sex offenses. (Sentenced to life, DeSalvo was killed in prison in 1973.)

1970

David Oman McKay, the ninth president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died at the age of 96.

1988

a China Southwest Airlines Ilyushin 18 crashed while on approach to Chongqing Airport, killing all 108 people on board.

1993

the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday was observed in all 50 states for the first time.

1994

Iran-Contra prosecutor Lawrence Walsh released his final report in which he said former President Ronald Reagan had acquiesced in a cover-up of the scandal, an accusation Reagan called "baseless."

Ten years ago:

A suicide truck bombing outside the headquarters of the U.S.-led coalition in Baghdad killed at least 31 people. A 15-day hostage drama began at the Arizona State Prison Complex-Lewis near Buckeye, where two inmates attempting to escape took two correctional officers hostage. (One guard was released midway through the ordeal; the other, a woman, was held the entire time, during which she was raped and beaten.) The New England Patriots earned their second trip to the Super Bowl in three seasons by defeating the Indianapolis Colts 24-14 in the AFC championship game; the Carolina Panthers defeated the Philadelphia Eagles, 14-3, in the NFC championship game.

Five years ago:

Israeli troops begin to withdraw from Gaza after their government and Hamas militants declared an end to a three-week war. A star-studded pre-inaugural concert took place on the National Mall, featuring Bruce Springsteen, Bono and Beyonce, with President-elect Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, in attendance. The Arizona Cardinals of the NFC advanced to their first Super Bowl with a 32-25 win over the Philadelphia Eagles; the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Baltimore Ravens 23-14 to win the AFC Championship and reach their seventh Super Bowl.

One year ago:

Former Democratic New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin was indicted on charges that he'd used his office for personal gain, accepting payoffs, free trips and gratuities from contractors while the city was struggling to recover from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. (Nagin, who later pleaded not guilty, faces trial in late Jan. 2014.)

Today's Birthdays:

Movie director John Boorman is 81. Former Sen. Paul Kirk, D-Mass., is 76. Singer-songwriter Bobby Goldsboro is 73. Comedian-singer-musician Brett Hudson is 61. Actor-director Kevin Costner is 59. Country singer Kristy Lee Cook (TV: "American Idol") is 30.

Thought for Today:

"The compensation of growing old was simply this: that the passions remain as strong as ever, but one has gained — at last! — the power which adds the supreme flavor to existence, the power of taking hold of experience, of turning it round, slowly, in the light." — Virginia Woolf, English author (1882-1941).

Spin off from a convo in the inbox:

Spin off from a convo in the inbox:
I caught it and spoke on the inconsistency of
personal pronouns vs objective pronouns
and now you swoll?? BUT YOU TAGGED ME!!!
SO....
Don't be mad when I call it like I see it
and don't get phissed off when I call YOU on it either
I love perspective poetry and storytelling
But what I'VE NOTICED is that when it’s about you
YOU say THEY (she/ he)
When it's NOT about you yall claim it talking (Me/ I )
hmmmmmm I see the slips and hear the lisps in your lips
wear your drama proudly it is after-all YOUR BULLSHIT
you're tryna sell me

Untamed Pen by Lisa N. Wiley pseudonym LeeLee Ain’t Msbehavin’

 About the Author:

Lisa N. Wiley pseudonym LeeLee Ain’t Msbehavin’ is a rare gem so sit back and be prepared to for her to enchant you with her emotional honesty.

Her poetic biography clearly shows you that her life is far from perfect but perfectly far from being disastrous, she has the uncanny ability to open her heart and make you feel what she’s saying in every chapter, writing style and subject matter in her genre of choice. She can easily take the reader on realistic voyager excursions thru her flying carpet or voyeuristic word play. You definitely feel like a tourist in her world here.

Lisa is the first born and was a preemie to parents Yvonne Culberson and David Wiley Sr. (Mr. & Mrs. Wiley) everything she did from arriving to surviving in this world has been a triumphant challenge that she’s boldly accepted; born to a mother of a twin LeeLee has twin siblings she has 3 sisters and 1 brother. She was born and raised in California she attended Taylor Skills School and Edison High School class of 1987. Lisa is the parent of 2 sons; Joel and Jaylon and for the past 2 decades has worked in the school system with special need children. Lisa is always finding balance in her fearless emotional tightrope. This poetess makes lifelong friends easily and has a grip on her singularity of purpose she has mastered the art of highlighting her flaws to the point where you forgot she wasn’t perfect.

What you’ll love about this author is what you’ll hate about her as well, which is; her brutal honesty, strength and courage to tell it like it is; she isn’t afraid to reveal her soul to the world in each stanza. Her outspokenness is a character flaw to be admired, because she is all for the underdog. LeeLee is a huge supporter of others in the indie artist community and beyond. She loves a good challenge and anything coming too easily can quickly loose her interest. She is a success story always evolving.

Through her words, she constantly shows her uncompromisingly loveable individualism and raw integrity. Her memories, victories, setbacks, joys and pain bleed through her ink pen making you want to hug her and join the throng in congratulating her endless potential of resilience and determination to get back on her feet when knocked down by life.

Sometimes it can be a pity party that she only tells you about after she’s wiped her tears and doesn’t care if you were invited or not. Her audacious courage would make ANYBODY feel like no mountain is too high.
From young to old, male or female you’ll appreciate the various facets of Ms. Wileys’ mindset. She is definitely in control of her feelings on the subject matter at hand.

Her debut poetry book; Untamed Pen, may be what gets her in the door but believe me it’s unquestionably her unapologetic moxie that’ll keep her there for years to come. So when you think of LeeLee Ain’t Msbehavin’ these words should come to mind Untamed Pen, ALL Woman, Every Woman, Loved Daughter, Mom, Aunt, Cousin, Sister, Friend, Real, Funny, Honest, Loyal, Courageous, Expressive, BIG FLIRT, Poet, Writer, Spoken Word Artist, Author, Lecturer, Supporter & An UnMuted Ink Administrator.

Lisa can usually be found in the cheer-leading section of her all-time favorite spot called Poetry By The Bay in Vallejo, California every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month but the best place to connect with her would be via email at spitit247@gmail.com and of course on her fan page Msbehavin's Madness at:  https://www.facebook.com/MsbehavinsMadness
